Solana Beach GO By Bike 2017!

GoByBikeMay is National BIke Month and for 2017 BikeWalkSolana has secured a GO By Bike mini-grant from SANDAG. "Go By Bike Solana Beach!" is a campaign to encourage Solana Beach residents to use their bicycles as an effective transportation alternative to the automobile, with a focus on commuting to work, local shopping, riding to school for the youth, and having fun. There will be 3 free activities funded by our grant to maximize participation for National Bike Month, particularly national days for biking to school and work. Better yet, make biking to work and/or school part of your daily routine!

May 2 and 6 -Smart Cycling Class - The Smart Cycling Program encourages and educates adult cyclists to understand the best practices for cyclists to co-exist safely, responsibly, and legally with motorists on our local roads. The program elements are certified by the League of American Bicyclists and consist of an evening  classroom session on May 2 followed by  a road session on May 6. where the classroom training is put to practice and will include useful bike handling and safety skills via parking lot drills. This is the first time a Smart Cycling class has been offered in Solana Beach, where the road session will emphasize Solana Beach roads and infrastructure.. Pre-registration is required. Click here to register for the pre-requisite Classroom Session and then click here for the May 6 Road Session. For those with kids, you will be better prepared to teach your children to ride safely. Teenagers may register if accompanied by a parent.

Please join us for a community bike ride around town on Saturday, January 7, 2017. There are two ride options. The shorter one is geared toward familes with children or folks who may be new to riding on roads and our Coastal Rail Trail. The longer one will also highlight the coast, but will head inland to go down Stevens to highlight upcoming improvements to make that a really friendly corridor for all road users. Rides will be led by experienced ride leaders who will review safety tips before and during the ride.SolanaBeachNewYear2017JoyRide v2

May is National Bike Month 2016

May is National Bike Month, where each year the focus is to get more people out on bikes as a mode of transportation. This is good for everyone's health, the environment, and a way to make more out of your trip to school or work. There are a couple of special days during the month to really encourage leaving your car in the garage and biking or walking to your destinations. The first is Bike To School Day, which is Wednesday, May 4 this year. Students are encouraged to go to school car-free that day by walking, biking, scooter, etc. This year's Walk 'N Roll event is co-sponsored by BikeWalkSolana and the Solana Beach PTA. The second event on Friday, May 20 is San Diego's Bike To Work Day. There will be several pit stops throughout the county, where commuting cyclists can stop for refreshment, nourishment, and other goodies. Details for all local events can be found on SANDAG's iCommute Bike Month page. Enjoy commuting to work and remember: "Every day is a bike to work day."
