Meeting Notes by Jill Cooper

Updates from the City (Dan). The Lomas Santa Fe Drive westside paving and striping project will be completed on October 20. The eastside final design is going out to bid and will be presented to Council on October 22. Douglas suggested using a mechanical counter to record the number of cyclists and walkers on this roadway. The UCSD Urban Planning Department might assist us.
Discussion of Crossing Guards for San Rodolfo and Earl Warren during afternoon dismissal. Presently Earl Warren is short-staffed. Douglas suggested that Haley check the Safe Routes to Schools report and enlist the support of other parents to advocate for more crossing guards at a future San Dieguito High School District (SDUHSD) board meeting. Dan’s understanding is that in November the SDUHSD Board will consider contracting with the ACMS Crossing Guard Service to direct afternoon dismissal street crossing at this busy intersection.
20 is Plenty
Douglas presented Oral communication at the September 10 City Council Meeting. Jump ahead to 4:30 to view. With the passage of AB 93, cities can change (lower) speed limits more easily on all city streets. Data shows that as speed limits decrease, so do traffic collisions. BWS needs to follow up Douglas’s presentation on 20 is Plenty.
Walk & Roll to School Day.
October 8, 2025 is the official day, but the Skyline-Solana Vista PTA are heading up this celebration of going to school outside the car. The dates are October 15 at Solana Vista and October 27 at Skyline.
Talking Points
Zillow Walk Score and Bike Score skewed low for most locations in Solana Beach.
” Bike Score measures bikeability of a home on a scale of 1-100, based on four components: the presence of bike lanes and trails nearby, the nearby hills, destinations and road connectivity, and the number of bikers currently in the area. The highest-scoring homes – those rating a 90-100 – are a “biker’s paradise,” meaning that daily errands can be accomplished on a bike. At the other end of the spectrum are homes rated “somewhat bikeable,” scoring below 50 with minimal bike infrastructure.”
Submit a request through the Customer Support Form to have them update their scoring to be more reflective of actual conditions. Suggested language:
I am reaching out to provide feedback on your walk score and bike score metrics for my property. I would like to learn more about the methodology used and how often the metric is reevaluated. The City of Solana Beach is only four square miles. From my house I can walk or bike to shopping, the library, local schools, the beach and transit relatively easily and quickly. The City of Solana Beach has improved access to the transportation network for cyclists and pedestrians and continues to look for opportunities to make the community welcoming to all travelers. New Business.
Jennifer: She would like to look at car and bike crash data. Karl can help with that
Melissa: The lighting for the bike path under the freeway is inadequate. CALTRANS is the agency with jurisdiction here.
Haley: What is the status of the proposed Santa Helena Neighborhood Trail? Dan reports that it’s still a project in the books although there has been some pushback from some people in the neighborhood.
City Engineer Dan Goldberg announced that he’ll be retiring after a 35 year career in engineering; 23 years of it in service to the City of Solana Beach. Although we’re saddened to see him go, we thank him for his years of providing BikeWalkSolana with updates from the City and wish him the best.
