- Update on Zillow Walk Score and Bike Score
The Walk Score and Transit Score that appear on Zillow are provided by a third-party company, WalkScore.com. Zillow does not have access to edit or change the walk or transit scores provided to us. Contact WalkScore directly to request the update: WalkScore.com Contact Us
Suggested language: I am reaching out to provide feedback on your walk score and bike score metrics for my property. I would like to learn more about the methodology used and how often the metric is reevaluated. The City of Solana Beach is only four square miles. From my house I can walk or bike to shopping, the library, local schools, the beach and transit relatively easily and quickly. The City of Solana Beach has improved access to the transportation network for cyclists and pedestrians and continues to look for opportunities to make the community welcoming to all travelers. In addition, Solana Beach received a Silver award as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) by the League of American Bicyclists. It is only one of 50 communities in California to receive a BFC designation. For more information on the City’s efforts, please refer to the City’s Project page: https://www.cityofsolanabeach.org/en/city- services/city-projects
It is skewed low for most locations in Solana Beach. Bike Score measures bikeability of a home on a scale of 1-100, based on four components: the presence of bike lanes and trails nearby, the nearby hills, destinations and road connectivity, and the number of bikers currently in the area. The highest-scoring homes – those rating a 90-100 – are a “biker’s paradise,” meaning that daily errands can be accomplished on a bike. At the other end of the spectrum are homes rated “somewhat bikeable,” scoring below 50 with minimal bike infrastructure.”
Meeting Notes by Jill Cooper from Zoom records
In attendance: Douglas Alden, Jonathan Goodmacher, Paul Dickstein, Haley Johnson, and from COSB Staff: Dan Goldberg (City Engineer), Nicole Grucky (Assistant to City Manager)
Updates from the City of Solana Beach
Dan provided City updates.
Nicole Grucky, who coordinates sustainability and cycling programs from the City Manager’s office, will assist with future updates from the City.
Lomas Santa Fe Projects Improvement Corridor East of I-5
The October 22nd Council meeting focused on selecting aesthetic elements (benches, trash cans, landscaping) rather than engineering design on the east side of Lomas Santa Fe Drive, but no final decisions were made.
Lomas Santa Fe Projects Improvement Corridor West of I-5
Nighttime striping work began on November 2 with completion expected by November 5. The design features buffered bike lanes, narrower travel lanes, and new camera-based signal detection replacing traffic loops.
Five signals now operate via cameras from Solana Hills to Cedros.
Signal synchronization has been maintained. I-5 on- and off-ramp signals are controlled by CALTRANS.
Dan requested feedback from cyclists on any detection issues with the new signalized camera system.
Other Initiatives:
- Melissa Fischel and Friends of the Solana Beach Library are organizing a “Bike to the Library” event on November 15th.
- Douglas proposed that we look into a potential book bike library program, consisting of a cargo bike pulling a trailer of library books, for spring along the Rail Trail.
- Follow-up on Zillow Walk/Bike Score concerns: Douglas and Paul contacted Zillow with concerns about the validity of Solana Beach’s low bike and walkability scores, and were directed to WalkScore.com. BWS members and members of the Solana Beach community are urged to contact WalkScore.com and ask the organization to raise our score.
Talking points: Our city is only 4 square miles, and although it’s a little hilly, many residents can easily walk or bike to school, shopping centers, and the beach, lagoon, and parks. Solana Beach has been designated a Bicycle Friendly Community, Silver Level, by the League of American Bicyclists. Raise our score! - Douglas spoke at a recent Council meeting about speed limit reduction on residential streets in the City. The proposal was well-received by Council; there will be a city-wide comprehensive review of current speed limits on all streets. Douglas suggested that we work to create a “20 is Plenty” page on the BikeWalkSolana website with resources to educate the public and garner their support.
Next Steps:
- City newsletter announcement about completed striping and bike lane improvements
- Collaborative work on speed limit reduction website content and community outreach materials
