Safe Routes to Schools (Dan)
The planning for the Safe Routes to Schools program is progressing and will eventually go to Council.
Bike Racks at the Rios Trailhead to the San Elijo Lagoon
Doug Lord at Pedego suggested that bike racks be installed at the Rios Trailhead to the lagoon, allowing cyclists to safely lock their bikes before going on a hike. More people arriving by bike to go hiking would reduce car traffic and parked cars on Rios. Dan said that he’d look into this.
Bike Month Events
Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 19. We think that the City will be publicizing this event. Revolution Bike Shop is hosting a pit stop along the route. We expect that SANDAG will be present at the May 14 Tour of Solana Beach Community Ride, promoting BTWD and the new Youth Opportunity Pass allowing those 18 and under to ride transit for free.
Tour of Solana Beach Community Ride is Saturday, May 14. BWS members: Please arrive by 9 am.
-
Ride monitors will be Douglas and Karl; and Karl will ask Kristine and Pete Grover to help. Ride monitors must be LCIs.
-
The practice ride for the Community Ride will be Wednesday, May 11. Meet at La Colonia Park at 5:30 pm.
-
Douglas’s spreadsheet—Please enter the amounts that you’ve spent on Bike Month events into the spreadsheet.
-
Karl: Bring registration and liability waiver forms on clipboards. Also table, chairs, bike pump.
-
Douglas: Bring pop-up tent, BWS sign, roll of tickets. Each person registering will receive a ticket, and the drawing for prizes will take place at the completion of the ride.
-
Jill: Ask Dan King for copies of Rules of the Road for E-Bike Safety fold-up booklets from SD Bike Coalition to pass out. Buy and get in-kind donations of raffle prizes from Solana Beach bike shops for both the Community Ride and the Scavenger Hunt.
-
Shawna: Make sure that your husband or SANDAG people safely store all materials left behind after Community Ride starts. Contact Girl Scout troops and others about the opportunity to informally sell snacks and drinks along the route. Continue social media publicity.
-
Please arrive on Saturday by 9:00 am to help set up.
The Tour of Solana Beach Scavenger Hunt May 1 – 31
As of now, 160 people have registered for the car-free Scavenger Hunt. We have prizes from the Solana Beach bike shops ready for the raffle which will take place in early June via Zoom. Please go to
Bikewalksolana.org for more information.
Community Grant
The City of Solana Beach Community Grant application is due by 5:00 pm on May 26. Douglas will fill out and return the application.
Ride and Park Your Bike at Fiesta Del Sol May 21 and 22
Fiesta del Sol goers are encouraged to think outside the car and ride their bikes to this popular event. The Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce is interested in providing monitored bike parking sites. With the main area for booths on Plaza Street, and additional activities on Cedros, our suggestions for a bike corral were at either San Diego Electric Bicycle or at the corner of Lomas Santa Fe Drive and Hwy 101 on NCTD property. Karl has passed on information about pricing for bike valets provided by the San Diego Bike Coalition.
Cedros Open Street Day plans are being postponed for now due to concerns from some of the business owners. We hope to try again next year.
