In attendance: Douglas Alden,  Paul Dickstein, Jill Cooper, Karl Rudnick, COSB Council Member Jewel Edson,  COSB Staff: Nicole Grucky (Assistant to City Manager) 

The meeting covered planning for cycling education workshops and community events in Solana Beach, including discussions about e-bike safety concerns and potential educational outreach to parents and community members. The group discussed plans for improving bike parking at the 2026 Fiesta del Sol event and organizing a walking scavenger hunt in the La Colonia neighborhood in partnership with the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society. Nicole provided updates on city infrastructure projects and offered to present on sustainability efforts at the next meeting. 

Next Steps

Nicole: Research other event companies or vendors who could provide secure bike parking/valet services for Fiesta del Sol 2026, in addition to the San Diego Bicycle Coalition, and report back findings. 

Nicole: Meet with Nicole from the Chamber and the bookkeeper to discuss last year’s bike parking at Fiesta del Sol, review perspectives, and determine how to better advertise and  improve bike parking for 2026.

All participants: Conduct informal surveys within their community networks to gather feedback on interest and needs for upcoming bike safety/education workshops, and report findings at the next meeting.

Karl: Call Kevin Baross at the San Diego Bicycle Coalition to discuss current and planned workshops, especially regarding e-bike education and outreach, and report back to the group.

Jewel: Forward the New York Times e-bike safety article to Nicole.

All participants: Send Jill a list of potential locations, historical facts, and points of interest for inclusion in the La Colonia walking scavenger hunt.

Karl and Jill: Organize a group walkabout in La Colonia in March to plan the walking scavenger hunt, inviting BikeWalkSolana members and members of the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society.

Douglas: Reach out to Fidel’s and Tony’s Jacal to inquire about providing gift certificates for the La Colonia scavenger hunt.

Nicole: Prepare and present an update on the Climate Action Plan and implementation at the February meeting.

Nicole: Obtain and provide a written update on the schedule for the east side of the Lomas Santa Fe Corridor improvements, including confirmation of the April 20th construction start date, for the February meeting.

Douglas: Schedule Nicole’s Climate Action Plan presentation for the February meeting.

Douglas: Coordinate with BWS members to thank the city council for the roadway improvements on Lomas Santa Fe Drive west of the freeway. Note: Solana Beach City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The second Wednesday of January is January 14.
