City Updates

Fiesta del Sol Bike Valet

  • The city has contracted the Bike Coalition to run the bike valet.
  • Hours: 9 AM–7 PM, both days.
  • Funded by the city budget, not Fiesta del Sol.
  • After 7 PM, the bike area will remain open but unattended.
  • Hours chosen based on past data showing most bike traffic occurs earlier in the day.
  • The group will monitor usage for future adjustments.

Community E‑Bike Class

  • Planning continues for a one‑hour “E‑Bike 101” workshop with the Bike Coalition.
  • Feedback suggests making it feel more like a community event, not just a class.
  • Idea: Partner with BikeWalkSolana to host a casual post‑class meetup (e.g., at Culture Brewing).
  • Culture Brewing has hosted bike‑related events before and is a likely partner.

Coastal Rail Trail Funding Event

  • Senator Blakespear held an event celebrating new CRT funding.
  • Michelle Strudling (Civic & Historical Society) spoke about community use of the trail, including bikes and scooters.

Scavenger Hunt Planning (La Colonia)

What Jill Cooper Requested

  • Submit ideas
for interesting or historic scavenger‑hunt locations in La Colonia.
  • Proposed information‑gathering walk:
    • Dates: March 22 or March 29
    • Time: 11 AM
    • End with lunch at Tony’s Jacal.

Volunteers Needed

  1. Two flyers

    • One for businesses (requesting participation/discounts).
    • One final promotional flyer for social media and local news.
  2. Business outreach

    • Deliver flyers and ask businesses to offer discounts or prizes.

Ideas Discussed

  • Expand scavenger hunt area from Academy Drive down to Valley/Stevens.
  • Include historical elements:
    • Old military academy (now Santa Fe Christian).
    • Former Highland Drive connection before the freeway.
    • Original family names
from the tree at La Colonia Community Center.
    • Past strawberry fields near present‑day CVS.
  • Potential business partners:
    • Restaurants (Buongiorno’s, Rudy’s, Tony’s Jacal, Fidel’s).
    • Rockademy (possible live music at La Colonia Park).
    • Local market, mattress store, Baker Ironworks.
  • Event likely to occur during Bike Month (May).
  • Prize drawing for completed scavenger hunt forms (Google Forms or paper).

Regional Transportation & Safety

Speed Limit Reductions

  • City of San Diego reduced speed limits on ~700 streets, including 15 mph zones near schools.
  • Relevant to Solana Beach’s interest in the “20 is Plenty” initiative.

Local Bike Infrastructure

  • Del Mar is redoing Jimmy Durante Blvd; opportunity to advocate for:
    • Buffered bike lanes
    • Bike detection symbols or cameras
      at Valley/Via de la Valle.

Appreciation expressed for Solana Beach’s new traffic cameras, which detect cyclists better than old loop sensors.
