BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN STREET IMPROVEMENTS IN THE CITY

Dan Goldberg reported that it’s official: Bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Stevens Avenue have been funded by SANDAG for $420,000, with the City making up the difference in funding and making an effort to keep costs down. In the future there will be an opportunity for community input about the final design.

Work on the San Andres medians is progressing, with paving mostly complete (Post meeting note: the median hardscape is complete), and landscaping and striping of street surface to take place in two weeks. There will be a meeting at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 13 to discuss San Andres median landscaping design.

Sidewalk repair and crosswalk striping on Valley near La Colonia Park will also be completed soon.

The extension of the Santa Helena Drive median near the Wells Fargo Bank is almost complete. (Post meeting note: the median is complete and landscaping appears to be in place.)

DONUTS DAY AT THE TRACK

There will be a community bike ride to Donuts Day at the Del Mar Race Track on Saturday, August 15. Families will watch the horses train, listen to speakers, and eat donuts! Bicyclists will meet at Fletcher Cove at 8:30 a.m. to ride together to the track. The route will follow the 101, giving families an opportunity to practice riding the sharrows. The return trip will be along the rail trail.

BICYCLE SKILLS

There will be a Traffic Skills 101 class offered at the Oceanside Library on August 14 and August 22. All classes are listed on the BikeWalk Solana calendar.

There was discussion of offering a shorter bicycle skills class called Spin Your Wheels in an effort to appeal to the many people who want to be more involved in active transportation—the cool way to get around! We want to focus increased attention on bicycle safety and skills and riding legally, so that even more people will ride their bikes and think outside the car. Karl offered to share some slides with Chance, who agreed to help with marketing this as “cool.”

SOLANA BEACH: A BIKE FRIENDLY CITY?

We would like the City to prioritize work on the application to become a Bicycle Friendly City. We can re-apply in February. Deputy Mayor Zito has said that he will work with Douglas. Speaking to the City Council during the public input time at the beginning of the meeting might help. Oceanside, Chula Vista and Coronado are already Bicycle Friendly Cities; why not Solana Beach? The BikeWalk Alliance might be able to support our efforts. Douglas will follow up on this.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS

This program which promotes the many health benefits of walking and cycling to school needs to be introduced to the Solana Beach School Board at a future meeting, with hopes that the School District will fund and administer it. Karl took an action to follow up with the School District to have BikeWalkSolana be on a fall meeting agenda.

BICYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS PATRONIZE LOCAL BUSINESSES

Right On Communication is soliciting recommendations of best restaurants, services, shopping for their Visit Solana Beach campaign.

SAFE STREETS FOR ALL

Circulate San Diego is doing a walkability survey to determine which local communities support safe streets for pedestrians. There is an app for the survey which allows the user to rate sidewalks, crosswalks, street lights, and other street features. In the last two surveys Solana Beach had a high rating.

SDCBC PEDAL CAMPAIGNS

The Bike Coalition is advertising “Pedal Campaigns” to highlight important projects that benefit bicycling and walking. Douglas and Karl are working on submitting a description of our vision for Stevens Ave., including everything in our CATS which is not part of the recent SANDAG funding.
