Agenda:

Meeting Notes by Jill Cooper

Those present included Douglas Alden, Kristin Brinner, Jill Cooper, City Engineer Dan Goldberg, Shawna McGarry, and Karl Rudnick.

Updates from the City (Dan and BWS members)

  • The North Coast Corridor Project new bike path has been completed. Hundreds of people on bikes and on foot attended the June 4 ribbon-cutting ceremony which featured speakers from local cities, SANDAG, and the Nature Collective (formerly the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy). The bike path runs parallel to the I-5 Freeway from Solana Hills Drive in Solana Beach to Birmingham Drive in Cardiff, crossing the lagoon on a bridge under the I-5 at Manchester. It’s a good north-south alternative to the 101, especially for Solana Beach residents living closer to or east of the freeway.

  •  The City is working on installing bike racks on the north end of Rios at the San Elijo Lagoon trailhead there. Bike racks would encourage those wishing to hike in the lagoon to think outside the car and ride their bikes to the trailhead: an improvement for residents on Rios who would not have to deal with so many parked cars on their street as well as for everyone working to slow down climate change. Low key, attractive, and affordable bike racks will probably be installed on the east side of the street.

  • The Bike Friendly Community application is still not available, but when it is, the City will apply to renew our designation as a Bike Friendly Community.

  • A Safe Routes to Schools report was presented to Council by City Staff and Chen Ryan on June 27. Those present at our June 6 meeting asked that Staff make every effort to publicize upcoming SRTS workshops and work hard to maximize community, especially Solana Beach parents’, opportunities to contribute their ideas to the plan.

BikeWalkSolana members thank the SB City Council for their award of a Community Grant of $1,500 for Bike Month events (a community ride and scavenger hunt) in May, 2023.

The next BikeWalkSolana meeting will be held on Monday, August 1 at 5:00 pm.
